Hello Hello everyone, and welcome to. the Face Your Ears podcast. My name is Justin joined, as always by the eminent Rich Bozic. Rich, how are you doing? Top of
Rich Bozicthe morning to you, sir. Thank you. you are looking like someone who's been working hard in the studio.
Justin HochellaI am, I've been just toiling in the deep mines of Sonic Splendor in my studio, late into the night. Yes.
Rich BozicWe won't go into too many details here, folks, but Justin's been working on something big in the background that we're gonna be hearing about soon. Is that correct, sir?
Justin Hochellathat is correct. Yes. Yes.
Rich BozicI didn't get that. Could you try again? What? Siri? I didn't get that. Could you try again, Siri? Trying to interject yourself.
Justin HochellaAI is everywhere,
Rich BozicYes.
Justin Hochellaso
Rich BozicThis is not for you, Siri. It's not for you.
Justin Hochellawe're keeping this within us humans, so just butt out for now. but yeah,
Rich BozicBut yeah, we've been
Justin Hochellahard at work
Rich Bozicwork this year.
Justin HochellaI'm really excited to see the growth that we've had with our YouTube channel. Or we're starting to see, views grow over on our YouTube channel, which is great. So Rich, thank you for what you're doing in putting the clips up on YouTube and. Engaging people in that new and fun way. So it's been really great to see.
Rich BozicThank you and thank you for taking the time to create all of that content, Justin. And if you guys are curious, just look us up on YouTube at Face Your Ears. as we do every year, we are now in that time of year we're going to reflect back on the year as the title says it. Yes.
Justin Hochellayear come and gone. Wow. Feels like face. Your year 2024 was happening just yesterday, but here we are. Yes.
Rich BozicI'm gonna hop into it. We're gonna do a series of questions here to close out the year. Can you tell me, Justin, what is your studio highlight of 2025?
Justin Hochellagosh, there's so much that I worked on, but one thing that was just different for me that really sticks out is a pop I worked on with a senior songwriter named Brooke Ari. We did a song together called The Verge of Loving You, and it was
Rich BozicWas really fun.
Justin Hochellait was just so different from what I normally do. It's. My regular music is dark, electronic, industrial stuff, and so I pulled out this, fun, bubbly, pop kind of song and she was terrific. Her voice is amazing. She was so fun to work with. So that was definitely a highlight for me. How about you?
Rich BozicThe track did sound good. Good work to both of you. And Brooke is actually a Boic Voice Studio client. I've been working with her for. Many years now, so it's a pleasure for me to see you guys get to do your thing together. So for me is basically overhauling the aggregate of all of my interfaces in the studio, getting that organized, I think this past year. We discovered that the chassis that I had to give me more DSP power with my Apollo was defective. There was some corrosion. Didn't realize that at first, but then with Justin's help, was able to create an aggregate device basically using Loop back. Once again, my praises be to loop back.
Justin HochellaYes. Thank you Audio gods for gifting us this wonderful tool.
Rich BozicI can't believe no one else is doing that.
Justin HochellaYeah,
Rich Bozicseems like Loop Back has the Marcet cornered on that one. I.
Justin HochellaYeah, it's great. Yeah. Loop back is. Basically, yeah, it's like aggregate software, right? Like it, I guess
Rich BozicI guess technically.
Justin Hochellait built into to the Mac Os, but it's nowhere near as intuitive or as reliable and just, it's just better to allow you to, aggregate audio interfaces together so that your software sees it as one device, right? That's the whole point of it.
Rich BozicYeah,
Justin Hochellayeah, it does it so well.
Rich Bozictotal game changer for me. It cleaned things up and allowed me to do things
Justin HochellaYeah. we reflect back on this year of toil and creative endeavor our studios, what did you learn in 2025 that needs improvement going into 2026?
Rich BozicI think what I want to do moving into the new year is I want to get more familiarized with all of the UAD plugins that I acquired. Last year.
Justin HochellaYeah. How many are there?
Rich BozicOh God.
Justin Hochellaof them,
Rich BozicYeah. It's one of these like packs that they have. Yeah it's dozens and it's almost overwhelming when you look at the list cause it was one of the big packages. The short of it is I want to get more familiarized with that. I'm gonna start going through them one by one, seeing what's there, and acquainting myself with them. How about you?
Justin HochellaI think it's less so in the studio a technical point of view, but it's more about how
Rich BozicHow I.
Justin Hochellamyself and Marcet myself. I think that's something like to be able to improve of just getting word out about. and what I do as a producer, as a trainer, and just even when I release music, just getting better at promoting that. for me it's very off the cuff kind of thing where I'll do a post or two about something and then leave it and I want to get better at being more systematic about it and just being more. Consistent and that kind of thing. So that's something I want to get better at. I know there's tools out there to help us do that kind of thing. Meta suite using Facebook, or, even just paying for ads on Reddit or Google or Instagram, something like that. That's something I want to look more into and just get better at.'cause I think that's what you gotta do. If you want to work with other people, you've gotta figure out how to let them know you exist.
Rich BozicYes.
Justin HochellaThat's
Rich BozicYeah,
Justin Hochellamy mind.
Rich Bozicthere's so many ways to go about it now. Some of the things that you listed for sure, and there's countless others, keep us posted on that. We'd love to hear what's going on in that endeavor.
Justin Hochellatotally.
Rich Boziclook him up. manmaderandom.com if you want to get a song produced. Also, you provide services in Logic Coaching and Lessons, right?
Justin HochellaYeah, absolutely. I also do Ableton Live and even GarageBand if that's what you're using. But yeah, Yeah. Logic Pro is focus and I love to sit down with people dig into the details and get them. Confident in producing music. So
Rich Bozicyeah, I
Justin Hochellato, to work with other people and I do it remotely, so it's all remote. So I've got the tools, I've got the talent, and I've got the expertise to help you. Yeah.
Rich BozicExcellent. This episode is not festive enough. We need to kick it up a notch. by the time this episode drops, people will have maybe exchanged some Christmas gifts, maybe had some amazing meals with friends and family. And are sharing good times.
Justin Hochellaabout to celebrate the coming of the new year of 2026. Yes.
Rich BozicYes. Yes. What better way to wrap up this year than to listen to this podcast?
Justin HochellaHmm.
Rich BozicThank you everyone for joining us and for being part of the adventure. I'm gonna move on to the next question here. So what are you looking forward to in the upcoming year, Justin? Yeah,
Justin HochellaYeah, I'm gonna
Rich BozicI let
Justin Hochellaof the
Rich Bozicgo back
Justin Hochellahere,
Rich Bozichere, but I think honestly,
Justin Hochellalooking forward to the most is a video series that I am
Rich Bozicfinally.
Justin Hochellafinally producing and getting off the ground now in 2025, but it will definitely. Knock on wood, it will definitely be releasing in 2026. So I am creating a video series on Logic Pro. I'm not gonna spoil the title or anything yet here, but it is by
Rich BozicBy far the
Justin HochellaI'm looking forward to the most essentially. The way I
Rich Bozicway
Justin Hochellathis video series is
Rich Bozicthat
Justin Hochellaas if I were sitting down with somebody who's learning Logic Pro for the first time. These are the things that that would I would. to teach them and show them in Logic Pro. And so it's a video series of that I don't wanna say too much more, but is by far the thing I'm looking forward to the most. How about you, rich? What are you looking forward to?
Rich BozicThat's excellent. By the way, side note on that, it is exciting people. I am happy to say that I am able to see some of the background stuff that's happening
Justin Hochellarich is like
Rich Bozicas Justin.
Justin HochellaHe's like kind of my co-producer in this in a way. He's reviewing some of the videos and giving me feedback and helping me out,
Rich Bozicit's good stuff people, and I'm excited for you Justin.
Justin HochellaThank you.
Rich Bozicwhat I'm looking forward to in 2026 is the release of music. So I have a few irons in the fire. I have a project called Beak Fist that I have been recording a lot of tracks four. And my buddy Alex has also been. In the mine laying down tracks, there's light at the end of the tunnel here. We're really close. I'm thinking things are gonna start dropping, but also I have a solo endeavor that I've been working on, and that too shall be coming in 2026, and I'm excited about that.
Justin HochellaYes, and I have heard, I've had the privilege of hearing both of these projects, little snippets here and there, and it's incredible. I'm so excited for you to release this. I'm so excited for people to hear it. It's fantastic. So definitely something to look forward to.
Rich BozicThank you, and Justin has been basically. Standing in the corner cracking the whip on me, getting me, keeping me on task.
Justin HochellaYes.
Rich BozicShould we tell'em about, let's tell'em about the thing we got going here. So we got a a little kind of almost accounta accountability.
Justin HochellaYeah I call it accountability buddy. Yes.
Rich BozicYes. Yes.
Justin HochellaBut yeah
Rich Bozicwe're basically keeping tabs on each other. Yeah.
Justin HochellaYeah. What was the coach's name in the Rocky movie? The old guy.
Rich BozicGod, come on
Justin Hochellaon, rock.
Rich BozicYes. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. God, I can't remember the name.
Justin Hochellagotta do it. Yoga.
Rich BozicYeah.
Justin Hochellait and like
Rich BozicYeah.
Justin Hochellaor something. What's that guy's name? Anyway, we've been, that, been that person for each other. What's his name? Oh, is it Mickey? Is it,
Rich BozicMickey?
Justin Hochellacould.
Rich Bozicno. Is Mickey the friend?
Justin Hochellaa gruff but caring trainer and manager
Rich BozicOh yeah. Oh, there you go. Yeah. Okay. Yeah,
Justin HochellaMickey Gold Mill. He calls him Mick, I think
Rich Bozicyeah.
Justin HochellaAnyway, Been each other's Nick.
Rich BozicEveryone needs a Mick in their life.
Justin HochellaYeah.
Rich BozicAlright. I.
Justin HochellaIt is time. It is time. Once again. We have arrived. the lightning round. So we're gonna do a quick series of questions, quick hits quick hits of questions, quick hits of answers, and I'll start us off here in our lightning round here our face your ears episode for 2025. So Rich, are you ready?
Rich BozicI'm ready.
Justin HochellaAlright.
Rich Bozicon. Start it off.
Justin Hochellais a new band slash artist discovery of 2025 that you wanted to highlight?
Rich BozicToday I would like to highlight, unleash the Archers.
Justin HochellaOh.
Rich BozicIt's a band. I actually. Heard of a while back, but I really dug into that band a little more. It's basically, metal. But it's got some fantasy aspects to it. Great band. Amazing vocals. Awesome guitar riffs. Guitar solos. Good stuff. How about you?
Justin Hochellaone artist I wanted to highlight is an independent artist from Europe named SShhluuuuuuck!. SShhluuuuuuck! is like this very aggressive. Industrial electronic project. And I love it. He's awesome. I actually have become friends with him too through Instagram. So he is a small independent artist and he's a part of a collective of industrial electronic musicians that I'm friends with. But his music has really stuck out to me this year, and it's really cool to like. Actually get to know the artist and hear their music and just be a part of the journey with them. So SShhluuuuuuck! And we'll, include links of course. So that's
Rich BozicExcellent.
Justin Hochellaof my band discoveries of 2025 that I've really loved.
Rich BozicExcellent. So what is a new plugin slash. Software slash app discovery for you in 2025.
Justin Hochelladefinitely Space Blender. So Space Blender is a plugin from Sound Toys and it's just this other worldly to call it a reverb as a, just doing it of injustice, I feel like. But it just creates these really ethereal kind of trippy. Reverb effects. That's lack of a better word, everything from a reverse reverb almost to just really huge, long, like you're in outer space, effects. So I really love Space Blender. It's been a lot of fun to use and it creates these really big long reverb tails and you can freeze them so that they're infinite, which gives you really cool effects that you can play with. So if you ever think about a reverb, usually it. Tapers down, right? It's that big kind of sound, but with this you can freeze it and it just, it's that sort of big tail, like frozen infinitely until you release it and it's awesome. It just sounds really good. But it also does like subtle coloring like vocals and stuff like that really well. love sound toys and Space Blender is definitely my go-to plugin this year for creative effects. How about you?
Rich BozicThe one that I discovered this year was re stem. It's actually a stem separator for drums. In that project, beak fist that my buddy Alex and I are in we had some issues with the way the drums were recorded. We did acoustic drums. We hired out a studio musician to record the drum parts You could take a recording of a drum kit and you can get in there and separate the individual pieces of the kit. So that was very helpful and a cool new discovery. Yeah.
Justin HochellaNice. a stem splitter for drums. It's so unique. Like usually when we talk about STEM splitting, it's for a full, fully produced song to break down. Just the drums in general, the vocals, the bass, guitar, et cetera. it's really cool. I didn't realize there was a tool out there that was that surgical that you could apply to drums, which I could see being extremely helpful in many different situations from, remixing a track to tweaking a drum recording so many applications. Very cool. so Rich, what is a new logic hotkey function feature that you discovered that you want to highlight and share with the people?
Rich Bozicthis is probably old news to a lot of people, but for me, control plus X, the strip silence function was something new that I discovered this year that I, that helped me get in there and clean up some of the recordings that I've been doing for some of these projects.
Justin HochellaYeah. That's
Rich BozicAwesome.
Justin Hochellasuch a time saver, just keyboard commands in general. I feel like a wizard just navigating through quickly and easily. But yeah, that's a great one. Stripping silence. And one thing I really like that I've learned about this year is in regards to the mixer. So if you dig into the mixer a little bit more, if you go into Logic Pro's, mixer, and you go to the View menu. There's a, say it's called like show components or something like that. There's a couple things there that I found and I'm like, oh, that's really cool. One of them is you can show the track number in the mixer channel strip, which is handy. Track 1, 2, 3. It just, it helps with Shorthanding conversation about a project. I think if you and I are working on a project, I can say, oh, track three, if we're looking at the mixer versus funky bass, 47 and you're like, what? Like it just creates like a shorthand, which makes. Communication easier and even just navigating through, just keeping things straight. Another element in the mixer that I didn't know about until this year that is really cool is you can actually show your track notes in the mixer. in logic, you can actually add note on a track by track basis. that's helpful to remember certain, settings or things you wanna try, et cetera. you can reveal that on the mixer, which is really handy because if you have it just on the track, like over on the side, goes away as soon as you click on another track, right? And so by having it revealed in the mixer, it's front and center all the time. So all of your notes for each track show up. All the time when you reveal this. So open your mixer, go to view. I think it's you manage mixer components or something like that. And you'll see in there's an option for track reveal, track number and for show track notes. So super handy. It's like one of those buried features. But I came across it one day watching a YouTube video just casually. Some guy like, was like, oh, let me put a note in here. I was like, what? That's a thing. That's
Rich Bozicthere's so much to uncover in,
Justin HochellaOh
Rich Boziclogic. What workflow advice do you have?
Justin HochellaI think this applies for anything is just have a plan in place. I think that's really important. Something I've done, like I mentioned the video projects I'm working on, but one, one of the ways. I've been really successful with that is having a plan and exactly what I want to do when, and prioritizing things and executing on that plan versus going half cocked like all over the place. It's easy to get discouraged that way. I think like when things are feeling really good, a plan feels like, ah, I don't need a plan. I can just throw a caution to the wind and just freestyle this and I'm having fun. But I think having a plan in place is good to fall back on when you don't feel that way, and maybe when it does start to feel like work and it does start to feel like a grind, I think having that plan is helpful. And also just going back to. Having somebody there to navigate the project with, I think is important. That's something that I've learned is that like having somebody in your corner to. share ideas with and talk about the project with that sort of thing. So more of a, know it's not a specific nitty gritty technical workflow thing, but it's something that has really struck me this year is that being very thoughtful and, intentional about how you approach work is important in completing it.
Rich BozicCool. Mine is. Piggybacking on logic is using colors to organize your project. Simple little thing, just option C, and you can get in there and organize all of the tracks via color. Now what I do in my projects is I try to associate the color with the instrument. For example, I'll use Violet for the voice lines. And you can be creative with that, whatever association you want to use with the color versus the instrument, just so you could easily look up. Oh I'm looking for the, all the vocals you find violet, boom. You could also use the track stacks and you can color code the track stacks as well. And even that, sometimes the icon will change color too with it so your eye can catch it easier. So there you go. Little technical tidbit.
Justin HochellaI am like such a staunch advocate of color coding tracks and using icons. So I applaud you in your use of colors. Two
Rich BozicExcellent.
Justin HochellaI, I I cover in my video series of how to do in Logic Pro. So as soon as you said that, I was like, oh, yeah, I covered that. That's a great one. I love it. That's awesome. I love that you use color coding. Um. We have to talk about it, right?'cause it's been the year of ai. But Rich, what soul crushing AI development are you least excited about?
Rich BozicWe don't want AI to yet again co-opt another thing, so we won't, I won't go on forever about this stuff. Yeah.
Justin Hochellafor hours on this, but
Rich BozicYeah. Let's see here. I would have to say it happened recently, actually, believe it or not. There were other things, but when I think about the one that. Was the most I guess soul crushing as you call it. Yes. It would have to be the recent ACE studio update of prompt based songwriting where it just generates a song based on prompt. And normally one would look at that and be like, oh, it's harmless. Just a little thing. A little toy to make some songs. But I just know that now we're gonna get flooded. With all of this ai, prompt based music that's just gonna flood everything and just dilute the pool of an already difficult ocean to navigate.
Justin HochellaYeah. I agree. I think that, honestly, I was thinking along the same lines that like prompt based. Really anything in ai, but especially music, I feel like, just'cause it's so near and dear to my heart, but prompt based creative output is just soul crushing in general. It's just slop. But something that occurred this year that I think is something everybody should know about is how basically Universal Music Group is giving up the fight of protecting copyrighted music. And they're basically. Partnering now with AI based music entities to start to license out content in their catalog for use with AI music creation tools. So basically like it's a free for all like with music and
Rich Bozicthis episode is about to be rated, explicit.
Justin HochellaSo that's something that, that I'm not very excited about too,
Rich BozicOh.
Justin Hochellathat, like Universal, one of the biggest players out there in the music industry is saying oh, okay we're not gonna, try to sue you for copyright infringement. And it comes down to for those not aware is that, these AI engines take copyrighted music in. To generate their AI output. And so that basically means that, in the future we could take, any pop artist stuff and remix it and do whatever we want with it, which is like novelty, I guess, because they're gonna get paid anyway. But for the lay artist, if you will, the lay person, it means their music.
Rich BozicYeah. It means everyone's So it, yeah. When you already weren't compensated for what you did. Now you can big big AI can now come in and swoop in and just some person at Universal, or whoever you're talking about with one word, can now use all that stuff. Wow. Okay. We can't dwell on this too long because this is supposed to be a happy
Justin HochellaWe're celebrating it, but yes I'm sure
Rich BozicI'm sure.
Justin Hochellabe more to come from us
Rich BozicConversation.
Justin Hochellathe AI front because it's an emerging,
Rich BozicYeah.
Justin Hochellachaotic topic. But
Rich BozicYes.
Justin Hochellawhat else is going on Rich?
Rich Bozicwhat is your favorite face your ears episode of the year?
Justin HochellaI have to say it's getting to meet with Marc Matthews. The Marc Matthews episode was definitely my highlight, my favorite episode of the year because he's just such a sweet
Rich BozicA sweet guy.
Justin Hochellaand he's just fun to talk to. I, it's so much fun, meeting with him and just getting to know him more like through that episode. So I thank you again, Marc for working with us
Rich Bozicyeah.
Justin Hochellaa great friend to this podcast. But it was a blast having you. I think just having guests is always fun'cause it changes things up and gives us a fresh perspective. And so that was definitely the case with Marc, but Marc is such a cool. Special individual and so talented and knowledgeable. It was a real boon to have him. That's a word I don't get to use often enough, but it
Rich BozicYes. Was truly a boon. Yes. Mine was, that's a great episode that you were talking about. Mine was episode 35, producing on a budget. What I liked about that one was the$1,000 challenge where we had to put together, we put together two configurations. I thought that was fun. So there you go. That's my favorite. Brett.
Justin Hochellanice. What about going forward into the year? Is there an episode or series of episodes you wanna tackle this year?
Rich BozicI want to go and do another episode of the producing on a budget with an even tighter budget.'cause I think that would be cool. Could we do it on$500? On a$500 budget? But based on what we just talked about earlier, I think we gotta delve into some more AI stuff.
Justin HochellaYeah. Yeah.
Rich BozicIt might be fun to try to have a guest on that one too. Maybe get someone else to join the, is it a rant or is it a pity party? What is it?
Justin Hochellayeah. It makes me think about what would be cool this year is to do something you mentioned, I think which is to have multiple guests. So we've always had just one guest. I think it might be really cool and interesting to have like more of a conversation if we had two or even three guests on the podcast. It's
Rich BozicOoh.
Justin Hochelladoable. And this technology we use for recording podcast makes that very possible. So that's something, I'd love to, to try and do this year if possible. Maybe on ai, I don't know, but something.
Rich BozicOh, AI will be involved somehow. Don't you worry.
Justin HochellaIt's unavoidable.
Rich Bozicwhat is something that goes on behind the scenes that listeners might find interesting with the podcast? Of course.
Justin HochellaYeah. one thing I wanted to mention in this regard is Descrip. So we use Descrip to edit our podcast and. our video clips and I was really intimidated by this whole sphere of media creation. But script makes it so easy to do both editing a podcast and creating short clips, like adding like the fun little gif and sound effects and stuff, it makes it so easy to do, including like auto caption creation. So that's something that we use. It's a behind the scenes thing I wanted to highlight, which I think is really cool.
Rich BozicThe thing I wanted to highlight is, I think that people would find it hilarious to hear me write and read out the scripts for some of those intros on some of those episodes. So mainly the ones that we've done in the past here, episode 40 episode 29 and episode 20 have. Skits in the intro, but the process itself is probably hilarious.'cause I'm trying out different voices. I'm trying to figure out how this character is gonna sound. So that would be something behind the scenes that people might find interesting. And who knows, maybe we can release some of that at some point. We'll see.
Justin HochellaYeah, who knows? Maybe a new character, shallow marriage this year. yeah, we'll see. The next question. What has been the most challenging thing about producing a podcast?
Rich BozicI want to do more episodes, but it's hard to find the time with everything going on in life. That's the most challenging thing. It's fun to do this, but there's just not enough time. Yeah.
Justin HochellaYeah, I think that's true and I think it also, I'm human. It can become a bit of a grind the toiling away of editing, but fortunately I've gotten much better at it and faster at it. And. I can now edit an episode, in a matter of hours, whereas in the past it took a matter of days. But, you know, sometimes I have to psych myself up to be like, okay, I gotta get this done and I'll procrastinate and procrastinate, but then when I actually do it, I'm like, oh, that wasn't bad at all. It was, that took no time. So I think that's part of it. And yeah I
Rich BozicI would.
Justin HochellaI think like it would be fun to do more. And, hey. you guys want us to do more, let us know. would be a huge uh, mitigating factor in all of this. If you all want to hear from us more we could certainly make it happen. It's not impossible. But that would be quite, quite a motivator to hear from our audience if they want to hear more. But yeah, I agree with you. There's a lot going on in life if you've done something a million times it becomes work, right? I enjoy it. I love doing the podcast, but it's work, right? And so I have to make sure I sit down and have the time dedicated and the mind space dedicated to, to think okay, I'm not gonna sit down and edit this podcast. And just be in that zone. Yeah, I think at the beginning it was like, oh boy, like I'm doing my podcast. This is really fun. And eventually it becomes just kind of part of the job of okay, I have to edit this thing and it's always a joy when it's done and I send it to you Rich, and you're like, this is great. Print it. It's yes. That's always a moment of
Rich BozicMm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Justin HochellaBut out. Filler words and silence and mistakes like, eventually it becomes this part of the grind. But
